There is no need to buy special or expensive equipment. Unlike other forms of meditation, you won’t need any alters, to recite chants, or ring bells, chimes or any other instrument. All you need is a quiet, comfortable place where you can be alone with your thoughts and you’re all set. Now, let’s get to work on changing how your mind works.

There are several basic steps involved in this process.

Identify the dialogue

Analyze it

Change the conversation

Let’s focus on step one: identify the dialogue. Have you ever been in a crowded room or auditorium and heard the buzzing of conversation all around you? What happens when someone comes up and speaks to you amidst the din of noise? Most of us will struggle to understand what is being said. Even if you strain to hear every word, the surrounding noise drowns out any hope of conversation.

In order to identify the dialogue that is constantly running through your head, you will have to develop a strategy for drowning out all of the out outside noise so you can focus clearly on what is being said. That way, when there is no other sound except for the voices playing out in your mind, you’ll be able to finally hear clearly what your inner voice really believes about you.

This starts with the breathing exercises we discussed in Chapter Two. After you have been practicing these techniques for a while, you’ll develop the skill of turning off the noise anywhere at any time, but in the beginning, you’ll have to find a quiet place so you can concentrate.

After you’ve done your breathing exercises for a few minutes, you’ll notice the tension leaving the body and you start to relax. Take the time to relish in this feeling. Appreciate the fact that you are finally alone. Then start the process of identifying your thoughts.

Concentrate on your heartbeat. Feel it’s rhythm and concentrate all your thoughts on it.

Allow everything around you to fade into the background until you can only feel the rhythm of your heart and how it matches with your breathing.

Recognize and feel the body’s automatic functions as they respond. Feel the vibration of the air as it is drawn in and out of your lungs. Feel how the muscles are rejuvenated as the blood carries oxygen to each cell in your body.

Don’t rush this process. Rather take your time and explore all of the sensations you’re feeling.
